What Affects the Cost?
- Program type. Social adult day programs (activities, meals, companionship) cost less than medical adult day health care programs, which add nursing supervision, therapy, and health monitoring.
- Location. Urban centers and higher cost-of-living states — particularly in the Northeast and Pacific Coast — tend to have higher daily rates.
- Services included. Transportation, incontinence supplies, and memory care programming may be included or billed separately. Always request a written fee schedule.
- Days per week. Many programs offer discounted rates for participants attending 4–5 days per week.
How to Pay for Adult Day Care
- Medicaid HCBS waivers — The most common funding source for eligible low-income participants. See our guide on Medicaid coverage for adult day care.
- Private pay — Out-of-pocket at the rates in the table below.
- Long-term care insurance — Most LTCI policies cover adult day services under "community care" provisions.
- Veterans benefits — The VA provides adult day health care at no cost to eligible veterans.
- Medicare Advantage — Some plans include limited coverage. Original Medicare does not cover adult day care.
